The colosseum is a large oval roofless stage in Rome, Italy. Formerly it was called Flavian Theatre. With a capacity of 50000-80000 spectators, the stage was usually used for sports competitions. Here the Mallaviras used to assert their power by defeating each other. They even had to fight with wild animals.
Occasionally women’s wrestling was also held. Many times Roman women fell in love with famous wrestlers and left home. Apart from this, dramas related to land-naval warfare and animal hunting were also shown to entertain their invited spectators. Established on six acres of land, the Colosseum is 186 meters long and 156 meters wide. It’s construction began between 70 and 72 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian and ended in 80 AD during the reign of Emperor Titus.
During the reign of Emperor Domitian,it was further athered and enlarged to make it more attractive. But later the Colosseum began to be damaged by earthquakes. It was repaired several times. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the responsibility for the Colosseum passed completely to the Church. Pope Sixtus V(1565-90)planned to turn the Colosseum into a woolen factory to provide jobs for unemployment.
In 1849,Pope Benedict XVI declared it a “Temple of Peach”. For the peace of souls of the slain martyrs since then, the cruel game of sacrificing one’s life has been banned there.
Best time to visit
The Rome Italy Colosseum is one of the region’s best attractions, and one of the most visited structures in the world(over 7 million in 2019).So it always has visitors. The busiest time of the year is between April to September. If you are here from March-October, the Colosseum witnesses peak crowds during this time. If you come in low-season (November-March) when there are fewer tourists, you will find it less crowded. Especially on non-holidays weekdays.
In recent years, even on weekend holidays, there are a lot of crowds. The Colosseum is available to visit for 7 days a week. It closes only December 25 and January 1. In high-season, the Rome,Italy Colosseum is crowded every day of the week. But in low-season, the Colosseum is less crowded during the week than on the weekend.
This is true even when it’s Culture week in March and entry is free. Just about any time of year, high season or not, always suggest visiting the Colosseum either when they first open at 8.30 AM or 1-2 hours before the last entry. In summer, you must avoid coming in the middle of the day,as there is particularly no shade and no place to take rest.
So, the best time to visit the Colosseum is from November to March(except Christmas and New Year),mid-week if you can and at 8.30 AM when it first opens or one hour before the last entry.

If you just go and purchase a ticket to the Colosseum the price is
- 16€ for an adult
- 2€ for Europeans between the ages of. 18-25. At the moment, this rate is valuable only to European citizens.
- Free for all under 18.If you booked in the past, which helps you to avoid the line, there is a 2€ fee. This is eligible also for free tickets. So for instance, if you are suitable for a free ticket,if you are under 18 or obtaining the Roma pass.

Full Experience Ticket
This new “Full experience ” ticket is not well explained. I have tried it out and can tell what it’s like. The new full experience ticket costs 22€(plus 2€ to book in advance). Similar conditions apply(free entry and discounts) as for the typical Rome Italy Colosseum ticket, the cost is still 2€ for European citizens aged 18-25 and free for all who are under 18.
Here’s how the full experience Rome,Italy Colosseum tickets works,
- You have 2 days to visit the Colosseum.

- If you divide this up over two days, you can go to the Colosseum and its related notable access(area or underground)on the first day,and Roman Forum/ Palatine Hill / Super sites on the second day. You can visit these sites in either order but they must be on two consecutive days.
The Colosseum is Free

Here are the tricks to get Colosseum tickets in advance and skip the lines:
- Manage the Roma pass or other type of Rome city pass (they all welcome to skip the line entry to the Colosseum). I don’t basically recommend this as a better money saving deal. But it does permit you entry to the Colosseum without standing in the line to buy tickets. If you got a Roma pass, you can avoid the huge line, and go to the shorter line for Roma pass holders.
- You may book a tour of the Colosseum when you book a tour, the tour guide / company takes care of getting the tickets for you and of course you skip the line.
- You can pre-buy tickets on the website.
